How much does a hair transplant cost in the USA? There is no official national price list. Most published US estimates for one procedure fall between about $4,000 and $21,000, and your own figure depends mainly on how many grafts you need, the technique, who performs each step, and which fees the quote includes. The main published figures:

  • Cost survey: the 2026 Synchrony Average Procedural Cost Study for Cosmetic Practices, cited by CareCredit, gives a national average cost range of about $3,919–$10,640, with FUE averaging about $6,344 and FUT (strip) about $5,675.
  • Patient reports: RealSelf lists an average of about $11,229 from 1,567 patient reviews (page updated July 2023).
  • Provider guides: US clinics publishing in 2026 quote $4,000–$21,000 per procedure and about $4–$10 per graft for FUE.

Separate comparison, Vivid Clinic in Istanbul: Vivid Clinic’s price list (September 24, 2026) gives a guide price of €2,300 for hair transplant treatment, before hotel nights, airport transfer and flights. The price depends on your graft count; see the Vivid Clinic section below for what the written quote includes.

Last updated October 18, 2026. Prices are in US dollars unless marked in euros. This guide is general information for comparing quotes, not medical advice; a surgeon must assess your donor hair before giving a graft plan.

Where These Numbers Come From

US hair transplant prices are not collected in one public database, so this guide labels every figure by its source type:

  • Surveys and patient reports. The 2026 Synchrony Average Procedural Cost Study, conducted by ASQ360° Market Research across all 50 states and DC and cited by CareCredit, and patient-submitted reviews on RealSelf. Both are published by companies whose business is connected to cosmetic treatment (patient financing and a doctor-review marketplace).
  • Provider-published estimates. Price guides from US clinics such as Advanced Hair Restoration and Bosley. These show what those providers say they and the market charge; they are not independent national statistics.
  • Arithmetic examples. Graft-count tables below simply multiply the published per-graft rates. They show how quotes scale before any discount, minimum charge or fee.
  • Vivid Clinic prices. Taken from the clinic’s own price list. Vivid Clinic sells this procedure, so treat its figures as one provider’s offer.

What Drives the Price of a Hair Transplant in the US

Most of the cost is skilled surgical time, which is why many clinics price the work per graft. Advanced Hair Restoration defines a graft as a natural follicular unit containing one to four hairs. These factors move a US quote:

  • Graft count. In the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS) 2025 Practice Census, members reported an average of 2,347 grafts for a first procedure and 1,637 for a later one in 2024 (worldwide member survey, 247 responses from 946 valid invitations; not a US-only figure).
  • Technique. In published US guides, FUT (strip) is priced lower per graft than FUE. We found no published US price for pen-implanter (DHI) or robot-assisted work.
  • Who does what. Whether the physician or technicians perform extraction and graft placement affects the price. Ask for this in writing.
  • Location. Clinic rent, wages and local competition differ by metro area.
  • What is bundled. Consultation, blood tests, anesthesia, facility fees, medication and follow-up visits may or may not be inside the headline figure.

How Does a Hair Transplant Work?

Hair transplantation moves hair you already have. Follicles from the donor area at the back and sides of the scalp, which is usually less affected by pattern hair loss, are moved to thinning areas. The surgeon designs the hairline and graft plan, numbs the donor and recipient areas, extracts follicular units, opens recipient sites at the right angle, and places the grafts.

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, transplanted hair commonly sheds two to eight weeks after surgery, most patients see results between six and nine months, and for some it takes 12 months. Because native hair can keep thinning, a dermatologist may also recommend hair-loss medicine after surgery.

Hair Transplant Cost Per Graft in the USA (2026)

Reducing quotes to a cost per graft makes clinics easier to compare. US provider guides published in 2026 by Bosley and Advanced Hair Restoration both put FUE at about $4–$10 per graft and FUT at about $3–$7 per graft. A medically reviewed Doctronic guide gives a wider $3–$12 per follicle.

TechniquePublished US price per graftWhat to check
FUT (strip)$3 – $7Leaves a linear donor scar; often the lowest per-graft price
FUE$4 – $10Who extracts and who places the grafts
DHI (pen implanter) or robot-assisted FUENo published US price foundAsk for a per-graft quote and which steps use the device
Per-graft ranges from Bosley (published July 2026, updated September 2026) and Advanced Hair Restoration (updated September 2026). These are provider estimates, not a national survey.

Two checks before you compare per-graft prices. Some clinics quote per hair rather than per graft, which makes the number look smaller. Many also apply a minimum charge, so a small session can cost more per graft than the headline rate.

Hair Transplant Cost by Technique: FUE vs DHI vs FUT

The 2026 Synchrony study cited by CareCredit reports average costs of about $6,344 for FUE (range $4,417–$10,640) and $5,675 for FUT (range $3,919–$9,759). Provider guides quote higher ceilings: Bosley lists FUE at $6,000–$15,000 and FUT at $4,000–$10,000.

FUE hair transplant cost

Follicular Unit Extraction removes follicular units one at a time with a small punch instead of taking a strip of scalp. Published US guides price it above FUT per graft. Among ISHRS members worldwide, FUE harvesting was used in 85.4% of male and 68.2% of female procedures in 2024.

DHI (Direct Hair Implantation) cost

DHI is a way of placing FUE grafts with a pen-style implanter that loads the graft and makes the incision in one motion. We found no national survey that prices DHI separately in the US, so ask for a per-graft quote and compare it graft for graft.

FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation) cost

FUT removes a strip of donor scalp that is then divided into grafts under a microscope. Published US guides price it lowest per graft. It leaves a linear scar, and recovery differs from FUE. If a US quote is unusually low, check whether it is for FUT.

Hair Transplant Cost by Number of Grafts (1,000 to 6,000)

The table multiplies the published per-graft rates by common graft counts. It is arithmetic, not what patients typically pay: real quotes for large sessions are often lower because clinics discount or cap them, and very large plans are often split over two sessions, each with its own fees. For comparison, the Synchrony survey’s national average range was $3,919–$10,640, and an Advanced Hair Restoration guide puts a typical first procedure of 2,000–2,500 grafts at $9,000–$17,500.

GraftsFUT at $3–$7/graftFUE at $4–$10/graft
1,000$3,000 – $7,000$4,000 – $10,000
1,500$4,500 – $10,500$6,000 – $15,000
2,000$6,000 – $14,000$8,000 – $20,000
2,500$7,500 – $17,500$10,000 – $25,000
3,000$9,000 – $21,000$12,000 – $30,000
4,000$12,000 – $28,000$16,000 – $40,000
5,000$15,000 – $35,000$20,000 – $50,000
6,000$18,000 – $42,000$24,000 – $60,000
Arithmetic only, not typical prices: graft count × published 2026 per-graft rates, before minimum charges, discounts, facility and anesthesia fees.

1,000 graft hair transplant cost

At published FUE rates, 1,000 grafts works out to $4,000–$10,000 before fees. Small sessions are where clinic minimum charges matter most, so ask for the minimum in writing. Only an assessment of your donor area can confirm how many grafts you need.

2,000 graft hair transplant cost

At $4–$10 per graft, 2,000 FUE grafts is $8,000–$20,000 before fees. Advanced Hair Restoration’s 2026 guide quotes $9,000–$16,000 for 2,000 grafts at its clinics.

3,000 graft hair transplant cost

Three thousand grafts is $12,000–$30,000 at published FUE rates, or $9,000–$21,000 at FUT rates, before fees. Provider guides quote lower totals for this size: Bosley lists $9,000–$13,000 (technique not specified, about $3.00–$4.33 per graft) and Advanced Hair Restoration $12,000–$21,000.

4,000 graft hair transplant cost

At published FUE rates, 4,000 grafts is $16,000–$40,000 before fees; Advanced Hair Restoration quotes $16,000–$24,000 for this size. Some clinics split a plan this large across two days and charge facility fees for each, so confirm whether the quote covers the whole graft plan.

5,000 graft hair transplant cost

Multiplying published FUE rates gives $20,000–$50,000, but plans of this size are often staged over two sessions, and some clinics price large sessions below their top per-graft rate. Whether 5,000 grafts can be taken safely depends on your donor density, which your surgeon assesses.

6,000 graft hair transplant cost

At published FUE rates, 6,000 grafts multiplies out to $24,000–$60,000. Plans this large are commonly staged rather than done in one session, because taking too many grafts can thin the donor area. Ask how many grafts each session covers and what each session costs.

Hair Transplant Cost by Treatment Area

Cost follows graft count rather than the area itself, but different areas tend to need different numbers of grafts. The graft ranges below are Vivid Clinic editorial estimates; your surgeon sets your actual number after an examination.

AreaGrafts (estimate)FUE at $4–$10/graft

Beard restoration1,000 – 2,500$4,000 – $25,000
Eyebrow restoration200 – 500$800 – $5,000
Graft ranges are editorial estimates; cost column is graft range × published per-graft rate, before minimum charges and fees.

Hairline transplant cost and hairline implant cost

Using our editorial estimate of 1,200–2,000 grafts for a hairline, that multiplies out to $4,800–$20,000 at published FUE rates. Advanced Hair Restoration’s 2026 guide quotes $5,000–$16,000 for a full hairline and $3,000–$10,000 for a refinement. Ask who designs the hairline and who places the grafts.

Full hair transplant cost

Restoring the hairline, mid-scalp and crown for advanced loss can mean 4,000 or more grafts by our editorial estimate, often over more than one session. At published FUE rates that multiplies out to $16,000 or more before fees, though quoted totals often include volume pricing. Ask for the full plan and the cost of each session in writing.

Hair Transplant Cost by Country

Prices abroad vary widely, and most published country comparisons come from clinics or agencies that sell treatment in those countries, including Vivid Clinic. Our hair transplant cost by country comparison and Canada hair transplant cost guide give editorial estimates. Compare any foreign quote on the same basis as a US one: graft count, who performs each step, what is included, and travel costs.

How Much Do Hair Plugs Cost in 2026?

Hair plugs, the large round grafts used decades ago, are no longer a standard technique. When people search for hair plugs today they are usually asking about modern follicular-unit grafting (FUE or FUT), so use the per-graft prices above. Repairing old plugs is quoted case by case. More broadly, ISHRS members reported that 6.9% of patients in 2024 needed repair of a previous surgery by another physician or a black-market clinic.

Female Hair Transplant Cost

Women are generally quoted on the same per-graft basis as men, so the same per-graft ranges apply. Planning can differ because female hair loss is often diffuse thinning, so the donor area needs careful assessment, and some women ask for unshaven techniques. A clinic should look for medical causes of hair loss before recommending surgery.

Cheapest Hair Transplant in the US: Where Low Prices Can Be Legitimate

Lower prices can come from a lower-cost location, the FUT technique, a smaller session, or treatment abroad. A low price is a concern when it comes from less surgeon involvement or less careful graft handling. In the ISHRS 2025 Practice Census, 59.4% of members reported “black market” clinics in their cities, and repair of a previous black-market transplant made up 4% of male procedures in 2024.

Is a cheap hair transplant worth the risk?

Be cautious if there is no named surgeon on the consent form, a final graft count is guaranteed before anyone has assessed your donor area, technicians work without supervision, there is no written follow-up plan, or you are pressured to book on the day. Good signs are a written quote with a graft range, a named surgeon and their role, documented aftercare, and a clinic willing to say you are not a candidate.

Hidden Fees: What the Quoted Price May Leave Out

Insurance, HSA/FSA and Financing

Health insurance generally treats hair transplants as cosmetic. CareCredit notes an exception for hair loss caused by burns or scarring. For tax purposes, IRS Publication 502 (2025 returns) lists hair transplants among cosmetic procedures you generally cannot count as medical expenses, unless the surgery is needed to improve a deformity from a congenital abnormality, an accident or trauma, or a disfiguring disease. HSA and FSA plans generally use the same definition of medical expenses, so check with your plan administrator before using those funds.

Many US clinics offer financing through medical lenders. Terms, promotional periods and interest rates depend on the lender and your credit approval, so compare the total amount repayable, not just the monthly payment.

Vivid Clinic in Istanbul: What the Price List Says

Vivid Clinic publishes its prices in euros. On its price list dated September 24, 2026, hair transplant treatment has a guide price of €2,300. The guide price is per procedure, before hotel nights and transfer, and the number of grafts changes the price. Your written quote is confirmed after a surgeon reviews your photos and, if needed, after tests in Istanbul.

What the written quote covers

  • Consultation and pre-operative tests
  • The procedure and anesthesia
  • Medication
  • Hotel accommodation, priced at €70 (4-star) or €80 (5-star) per room per night for two guests
  • VIP airport transfer, €100
  • A patient coordinator and interpreter, and a 24/7 aftercare line
  • Flights are not included

Example: hair transplant trip cost at Vivid Clinic

Using the price list and the three nights Vivid Clinic suggests for a standard session: €2,300 guide price + 3 nights at €80 + €100 transfer = €2,640 before flights (€2,610 with a 4-star hotel). Your graft plan can move the procedure price up or down, and your flights, time off work, travel insurance and any extra nights are additional. To compare with US quotes, convert the euro total at the exchange rate on the day you compare.

How to compare a US quote with an Istanbul quote

  • Put both on the same graft count and the same technique.
  • List who performs extraction, site creation and graft placement in each clinic.
  • Compare procedure-only cost separately from the full trip cost (flights, nights, time off).
  • Ask how follow-up is handled at home, and what happens if a second session is needed.
  • Do not assume the same technique name means the same team, process, result or risk.

Conclusion: How to Judge What You Should Pay

US provider guides quote about $4,000 to $21,000 for a procedure, survey and patient-reported averages sit lower, and graft count accounts for much of the spread. Judge any quote on four things: the cost per graft, who physically performs extraction and placement, what is excluded, and whether the graft plan is based on an assessment of your donor area.

For a specific number for your case, contact Vivid Clinic for a free consultation. Send photos of your hairline, crown and donor area, and you will receive a written quote after a surgeon reviews them.

Frequently Asked Questions About Hair Transplant Cost

How much does a hair transplant cost in the USA?

There is no official national figure. Most published US estimates for one procedure fall between about $4,000 and $21,000. The 2026 Synchrony cost study cited by CareCredit gives a national average range of about $3,919–$10,640, and RealSelf lists a patient-reported average of about $11,229 (page updated July 2023). Graft count and technique move the number most.

What is the typical hair transplant cost per graft in the US?

US provider guides published in 2026 put FUE at about $4–$10 per graft and FUT at about $3–$7. Check whether a quote is per graft or per hair, and ask about minimum charges.

How much does a 3,000-graft hair transplant cost?

At published FUE rates, 3,000 grafts multiplies out to $12,000–$30,000 before fees, or $9,000–$21,000 at FUT rates. Provider guides quote lower totals for this size: Bosley lists $9,000–$13,000 (technique not specified) and Advanced Hair Restoration $12,000–$21,000.

Why do quotes for the same number of grafts differ so much?

Technique, who performs each step, location, minimum charges and which fees are included all change the total. Put quotes side by side on the same graft count and list what each one includes.

Which fees are often not included in a US quote?

Ask about consultation, pre-operative tests, anesthesia, facility fees, medication, PRP or other add-ons, and follow-up visits. Ask for one written all-in total before booking.

How much does a receding hairline transplant cost?

Advanced Hair Restoration’s 2026 guide quotes $5,000–$16,000 for a full hairline and $3,000–$10,000 for a refinement. Using our editorial estimate of 1,200–2,000 grafts, published FUE rates multiply out to $4,800–$20,000 before fees.

How much does a female hair transplant cost?

Women are generally quoted on the same per-graft basis as men. Planning can differ because female hair loss is often diffuse thinning, and unshaven techniques can raise the quote.

Is hair replacement the same as a hair transplant?

Not always. “Hair replacement” can mean surgical transplantation or a non-surgical hair system worn over the scalp. This guide covers surgical transplants; hair systems are priced differently.

Does insurance, an HSA or an FSA pay for a hair transplant?

Usually not. Insurers generally treat it as cosmetic, with exceptions such as hair loss caused by burns or scarring. IRS Publication 502 lists hair transplants among cosmetic procedures that do not count as medical expenses unless the surgery is needed to improve a deformity from a congenital abnormality, an accident or trauma, or a disfiguring disease. Check with your insurer and plan administrator.

Is a hair transplant a one-time cost?

Not necessarily. In the ISHRS 2025 Practice Census (2024 data), members reported an average of 1.5 procedures to reach the desired result (median 1). The American Academy of Dermatology notes that hair loss can continue after a transplant, so some patients also use medication.

How much do hair plugs cost today?

Old-style plugs are no longer a standard technique. Searches for hair plugs usually mean modern FUE or FUT, which is priced per graft as described above.

How long until I see results?

The American Academy of Dermatology says transplanted hair commonly sheds two to eight weeks after surgery, most patients see results at six to nine months, and some take 12 months.

Vivid Clinic (Istanbul): what does a hair transplant cost?

Vivid Clinic’s price list (September 24, 2026) gives a guide price of €2,300 (euros) for hair transplant treatment, before hotel nights (€70–€80 per room per night for two guests), a €100 airport transfer and flights. The price depends on your graft plan and is confirmed in a written quote after a surgeon reviews your photos.
