Day 1
Arrival
A VIP transfer takes you to your hotel. Your patient coordinator and interpreter explain the plan.
A gastric sleeve is keyhole surgery that removes about three-quarters of the stomach, so small portions fill you and hunger falls. It suits adults with a BMI of 40+, or 35+ with a weight-related illness. Plan about seven days in Istanbul.

The surgeon permanently removes the larger, outer part of the stomach, leaving a narrow, banana-shaped sleeve. Food still follows the normal route, with no rerouting, unlike a gastric bypass. The smaller stomach holds less, and many patients notice their appetite is quieter.

| Procedure time | Typically 1–2 hours |
|---|---|
| Anaesthesia | General anaesthesia |
| Hospital stay | 2–3 nights |
| Recommended stay in Istanbul | About 7 days (longer if your surgeon advises) |
| Back to desk work | Around 2–3 weeks |
| Exercise | Walking from day one; gym and heavy lifting after about 4–6 weeks |
| Diet stages | Liquids → purée → soft → regular over about 6–8 weeks |
| Weight loss | Fastest in the first 6 months; lowest weight usually at 12–18 months |
| Results last | Long term, provided eating habits and follow-up are maintained |
| Stitches | Small keyhole incisions, usually dissolvable stitches |
Lower thresholds may apply to people of Asian ancestry. Check your figure with our free BMI calculator and the bariatric surgery requirements checklist.
Preparation starts before you travel, often with a two-week low-calorie or liquid diet to shrink the liver. In Istanbul, blood tests, ECG, chest imaging and an ultrasound come first. If a result is outside a safe range, surgery is postponed rather than rushed.
General anaesthesia, with leg compression devices against clots.
Four to five small incisions in the upper abdomen.
Blood vessels along the stomach's outer curve are sealed.
A stapler shapes a narrow sleeve around a calibration tube.
The staple line is checked and reinforced where needed.
Small wounds closed, usually with dissolvable stitches.
Day 1
A VIP transfer takes you to your hotel. Your patient coordinator and interpreter explain the plan.
Day 2
You meet the surgeon and anaesthetist and complete your tests. If all is in order, surgery follows the same day or next morning.
Days 2–4
Walking within hours, sips of clear fluid once the team is happy, pain relief, anti-sickness medication and blood-thinning injections.
Days 4–7
Rest, short walks and the liquid diet, with daily coordinator check-ins. A final check around day 6 or 7 before your airport transfer.
Share your height, weight, health history and any recent tests. Our medical team tells you whether a sleeve suits you or another option fits better. Free, no obligation.
Your diet moves through four textures over about six to eight weeks. Most people return to desk work in two to three weeks.
You take a bariatric multivitamin every day for life, plus calcium with vitamin D, and vitamin B12 as advised. Iron is added if your levels fall.
A Vivid Clinic dietitian follows you remotely by video or messaging. Blood tests are repeated at around 3, 6 and 12 months, then yearly.

In short: a sleeve offers restriction plus hormonal change without rerouting and with simpler nutrition. A bypass is often preferred for reflux or long-standing diabetes.
| Criterion | Gastric sleeve | Roux-en-Y gastric bypass |
|---|---|---|
| Rerouting of the intestine | No | Yes |
| Acid reflux | Can start or worsen | Often preferred when reflux is present |
| Hospital nights | 2–3 | 3–4 |
| Vitamin monitoring | Lifelong supplements; fewer absorption issues | Lifelong supplements; more monitoring |
| Dumping symptoms | Less common | A recognised risk |
A mini gastric bypass (OAGB) uses one join instead of two. For lower BMIs, a gastric balloon or gastric botox is non-surgical, temporary and more modest. Our guide to the four types of bariatric surgery goes into more detail.

Every operation carries risk, and a gastric sleeve is no exception. A staple-line leak is uncommon but serious, which is why we keep you close to the hospital for the first week.

The NHS overview of weight loss surgery is a useful independent summary.
Plan on about seven days in Istanbul for a gastric sleeve. That covers a day of tests and consultation, surgery, two to three nights in hospital and a few days in your hotel so the team can check that you are drinking well, walking comfortably and free of warning signs before you fly. Some patients stay longer if they have diabetes, sleep apnoea or a longer journey home, and your surgeon confirms the date.
For a gastric sleeve in Istanbul, the mainstream starting point is a BMI of 40 or more, or 35 or more with an obesity-related condition such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure or sleep apnoea. International ASMBS/IFSO guidance also allows surgery to be considered at a BMI of 30 to 34.9 with metabolic disease. Our medical team reviews each case individually, so a BMI alone never decides it.
Before a gastric sleeve in Istanbul you will usually have a full blood count, biochemistry, clotting, blood sugar and HbA1c, thyroid tests and vitamin levels, plus an ECG, chest imaging and an abdominal ultrasound. Many patients also have an upper endoscopy to check for reflux, hiatus hernia or Helicobacter pylori. An anaesthetist reviews the results, and surgery goes ahead only when they are acceptable.
Not always. A sleeve can worsen existing reflux and, in some people, cause new reflux over the long term; the ten-year SLEEVEPASS trial found reflux more often after a sleeve than after a bypass. If you already take reflux medication or have a hiatus hernia or oesophagitis on endoscopy, your surgeon may recommend a Roux-en-Y gastric bypass instead, or a hernia repair at the same time.
Most people lose weight fastest in the first six months and reach their lowest weight at around 12 to 18 months. In the SLEEVEPASS randomised trial, patients had lost about half of their excess weight at five years on average, with some regain later. Your result depends on your starting weight, health conditions, eating habits, activity and how closely you follow the dietitian's plan.
You walk within hours of waking and several times a day during your stay. Most people return to desk work in two to three weeks, usually during the purée stage. Gym work and heavier lifting usually return from about four to six weeks, once your surgeon agrees. On the flight home, wear compression stockings, drink little and often, and walk the aisle when you can.
After a gastric sleeve in Istanbul you take a bariatric multivitamin every day for life, plus calcium with vitamin D, and vitamin B12 as advised. Iron is added if your levels fall. Missed supplements can lead to deficiencies of iron, B12, folate, vitamin D and calcium. Blood tests at around 3, 6 and 12 months, then yearly, show whether your doses need adjusting, with your local doctor or through our team.
